Winter, a return to snow-to quiet and to deep rest. While the animals here in the Sierras are hibernating under the snow waiting for the first signs of Spring, we, too, feel the hibernation taking place inside of us. When the sun hangs low on the horizon and days grow shorter, we know the Winter Solstice is almost here. As the longest night of the year in the Northern Hemisphere, December 21st beckons us to go within, sleep more, and eat well. Our bodies move a little slower, and our foods cook long and tender to deeply nourish our bodies for yet another long Winter. We savor the Winter squash, beans, and warming spices to carry us through this season-and feel overjoyed by the Winter Citrus fruits that keep our joy elevated when we are missing Summer’s peaches.

All of our ancestors, for all time, spent this time of year sitting with the darkness of solstice and the coming of the light with age-old rituals, calling us to connect and reflect. Despite nature’s dormancy at this time of year, many solstice traditions put plants center stage, using seasonal favorites ranging from mistletoe, oak logs and evergreen trees to poinsettias and holly. Although these are often associated with Christmas time, their wisdom is rooted in ancient spiritual traditions that both predate and have run parallel to Christianity.

“Solstice” comes from the Latin words sol (sun) and sistere (to make stand still), referencing the two times per year when the sun sits at its southernmost point in the winter sky and then its northernmost point in the summer sky. While the Winter Solstice marks the shortest daylight hours of the year, it also ushers in the beginning of longer days, and many ancient cultures created rituals around it to ensure that the sun would indeed return. As with so many celebrations, plants play an integral role in Winter Solstice festivities. Trees such as evergreens, and plants such as firs, pines, holly, and mistletoe all earned their holiday status because they are among the rare to be lively at this dormant time of the year. As such, ancient people decorated their homes with holly and evergreen medicine to bring good luck.

Tapping into the earth’s primal energies is, therefore, universal, making this special season inclusive of all people all around the world, regardless of which traditions you celebrate around the Winter Solstice. My desire is that you find these herbal medicines supportive through the Winter months and that they hold deep healing & love for you and your loved ones. Pomegranate Spice Bitters - 2 oz
Pomegranates arrive in the foothills of the Sierras just in time for Fall and Winter. Pomegranate skin and fruit can help to support healthy gut bacteria and support in reducing inflammation in the digestive tract. The fruits are also rich in fiber, bioflavonoids & vitamin k and c. Bitters are an incredible medicine to utilize in supporting digestion and better assimilation of nutrients. In the Wintertime, having warming herbs in your bitters helps to support digestive fire and keeping the belly calderon warm and nourished. We are excited to share that the pomegranates in this bitters hail from the fabulous sunset ridge fine fruits in Newcastle, CA.

Ingredients: bioregional CA pomegranate fruit and rind, cinnamon(Cinnamomum burmannii), Citrus peel (Citrus sinensis), Cloves (Syzygium spp.), Anise seed (Pimpinella anisum).

Suggested use: enjoy a few drops on the tongue directly before meals to support digestion. Or enjoy a few dropper fulls in a little bubbly water with a wedge of orange or lemon or add to your favorite beverage for a herby digestive addition.

Satsuma Mandarin & Tumeric Tonic - 8 oz
Satsumas hit the markets in November and is one of my all time favorite things in the whole wide world. It's almost as if they are little orange jewels wrapped up in an easy to peel rind packed with the perfect amount of sweet and sour. Satsuma mandarins like other citrus fruits are rich in vitamin C. Citrus is utilized primarily in herbalism as a warming herb to support digestion and help harmonize formulas. Paired with some magical inflammatory supportive warming turmeric, ginger root and cinnamon-all rounded out with some of the magical honey from here in the valley we call home. This tonic is perfect added to hot water with a little extra honey, your hot toddies or bone broth for an herbal kick! Let this juicy tumeric tonic support your digestive, inflammatory and Immune healing sip by sip.

Ingredients: organic cane alcohol infused with fresh local turmeric (Curcuma longa), ginger root(Zingiber officinale) ,CA passionfruit, bioregional satsuma fruit and peel infused into raw apple cider vinegar, and raw local honey from the valley we call home.

Suggested use: Adults take 1-3 tablespoons, children ages 5-10 take 1-2 teaspoons, and children ages 2-5 take ½-1 teaspoon 2-3 times daily. Increase dose during active illness to every 2-3 hours. This turmeric tonic is especially indicated in extra support of Immune and Inflammatory wellness. Try in a little bubbly water or added to tea for some herbal healing magic. Drop in and feel the heal.

Big Sage Hydrosol - 2oz
Feel connected to the earth and let go of what is no longer serving you with this locally harvested & crafted sage hydrosol. Sage supports you to feel balanced and still while clearing and supporting the space around you. Ahh sweet sagebrush, one of the smells that brings us all a little closer to the lands we live on here on Washoe land. There’s nothing quite like the smell of sage after the rain. I was lucky enough to work with some sage from the land we live on here in the High Sierras that would have otherwise been composted or hauled away. My second time distilling this medicine I continue to be in awe of wild sage’s aromatics and healing powers. Use this hydrosol to hydrate your skin, support your nervous system or to help support Respiratory health.

Ingredients: distillation of local Big Sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata) made with local mountain spring water.

Suggested use: Enjoy liberally as a face and body mist or a room spray. Sage is especially good for helping to soothe the nervous system and help you feel at peace. Possesses antimicrobial actions and is great as a room spray to clean the air or try as a bug spray too!

Respiratory Revival Tea - 3oz
There’s nothing more I love than a warm cup of tea on a cold Winter day. Since Sierra Roots Wellness has been providing the community with herbal medicines, I have made more batches of this tea than anything else. Refined little by little I am now so happy with this formula on every level. We use it in our household with everything from allergies, dry sinuses, sore throats and during and after Respiratory illnesses. The monarda in this formula comes from local farms in the area and Oshala farms in Oregon. The gorgeous red clover is always from Ebb and Flow Herb Farm in Washington. Revive your respiratory system with this delicious tea made to revive and nourish the lungs + respiratory system. This blend is your BFF for respiratory illness and allergies and works to soothe and support exposure to wildfire smoke.

Ingredients: Red clover blossoms (Trifolium pratense), peppermint (Mentha piperita), Monarda leaf + flower(Monarda spp), orange peel (Citrus sinensis), marshmallow root (Althea officinalinis), mullein leaf (Verbascum thapsus), juniper berries (Juniperus spp.), rosehips (Rosa canina) and licorice root (Glychrizza glabra).

Suggested use: Pour 16 oz boiling water over 1-3 TBSP of herb. Let sit for 10-20 minutes or infuse overnight with the lid on. Strain, Sip and enjoy and feel the heal.

Rosemary Nettle Garlic Salt - 4oz
Having a mineral-rich garlicky herb salt in the pantry during the holidays is sure to please your senses as well as the whole family! Enjoy the flavors of nettle, rosemary, and thyme with a kick of healing local garlic in all your favorite dishes and bites. This salt has local garlic from Jameson Farms, nettle leaf from the wild or Ebb and Flow Herb Farm, and healing thyme & rosemary, all blended with the best salt ever-Redmond's real salt! Try this salt on your holiday roast, in mashed potatoes, sprinkled over carrots or brussel sprouts-or on anything really!

Ingredients: stinging nettle leaves, rosemary, rosemary powder, thyme, local garlic powder, and Redmond's Real Sea Salt.

Suggested use: Enjoy this salt in replacement of regular salt! Nettles are rich in essential vitamins and minerals, and rosemary, garlic and thyme are known herbs for the Immune system. This is great on potatoes, steak, added to dips, and all your favorite meals. Experience the magic!

May you all feel nourished and supported with the herbs this Winter season. In service of the plant kin, may you all feel the magic inside and out!
